So? So the point is we're all connected, see? Through love, through loneliness, through one tiny, lamentable lapse in judgment. All of us, in our isolation, we reach out from the darkness, from the alienation of modern life, to form these connections. I think it's a really profound statement about the nature of human existence.

Alice, "Let's Do It"

Alice Pieszecki is a main character in The L Word and its sequel The L Word: Generation Q. She is portrayed by Leisha Hailey and debuts in the series premiere.

Alice always has her finger on the pulse of the latest trends and gossip in Los Angeles. She has had various careers in the media and entertainment industry, ranging from freelance journalist, radio personality and podcaster, to eventually the host of her own talk show. Alice loves meeting new people and has no shortage of friends[19] thanks to her vibrant and gregarious disposition. However, she has a notoriously big mouth,[20] and her chatty, inquisitive nature often gets her caught in the middle of everyone's drama.

Beyond her fun and quirky sense of humor, Alice is brimming with ideas and aspires to make a real difference in the world, but struggles to be taken more seriously in her work.[21] Alice also looks for love throughout the series, most notably with Dana Fairbanks, Tasha Williams, and Nat Bailey, but has trouble standing up for herself and letting go of bad relationships.

Summary[]

Alice was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, by her mother Lenore, a fame-hungry struggling Hollywood actress. She came out as bisexual in college and has dated both men and women since, but has a self-described strong preference for women.[22] After college, Alice became a writer for LA Magazine and, through her work, came to know Bette. Alice and Bette dated until Bette cheated on and dumped Alice, but they remained best friends after. Through the nature of her work and her love for gossip, Alice would later befriend Shane and Dana and bring them into her social group. Alice eventually realized how insular the lesbian community in Los Angeles is and developed The Chart, a compilation of sexual encounters that link her and her friends.

In The L Word season 1, Alice is stuck writing fluff pieces while her more ambitious ideas such as The Chart are dismissed at work. She also falls back into a relationship with her ex-girlfriend Gabby, despite Gabby's manipulative behavior and infidelity. Alice later ends things with Gabby at her friends' encouragement, and then fumbles through a short-lived romance with the "lesbian-identified man" Lisa as she tries to figure out what she wants in a relationship. Eventually, Alice's constant disdain for Dana's fiancée Tonya culminates with the revelation that she is in love with Dana.

Despite their initial efforts to remain platonic, Alice and Dana begin an affair in season 2. Alice eventually gives Dana an ultimatum and Dana ends her engagement to Tonya. No longer having to hide, Alice and Dana bask in their new-found love, until Alice's insecurities flare up with the return of Dana's ex-girlfriend Lara. Meanwhile, Alice lands a new job as the host of her own radio show centered on the concept of The Chart.

Season 3 begins after a six-month time skip with Dana and Lara back together and Alice handling her breakup with Dana very badly. Alice has been abusing prescription medication to cope and has taken to stalking Dana. With Helena's help, Alice begins to move on and repair her friendship with Dana. Alice is devastated when Dana is diagnosed with breast cancer and although a bitter Dana tries to push everyone away, Alice refuses to leave her best friend's side. Dana ultimately passes away and in their grief, Alice and Lara seek sexual comfort in each other.

By season 4, Alice is ready to let go of her grief. Her attempts to broaden her horizons leads to her having an affair with the married and much older Phyllis, but Alice quickly ends the affair after meeting Phyllis' husband. Alice then hits it off with Tasha and the two start dating, even as Alice struggles to reconcile her contempt for the Iraq War with Tasha's pride in being a soldier. Alice is devastated when Tasha is deployed to Iraq but overcomes her fear of losing another loved one to attend Tasha's going away party. Meanwhile, OurChart, Alice's website for The Chart, blows up on the internet and she starts an accompanying podcast called Alice in Lesboland.

In season 5, Alice is surprised when Tasha returns early only to learn that she is being investigated for homosexual conduct under the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Alice does her best to help Tasha remain in the service even as she herself comes under interrogation; Tasha ultimately decides not to deny her relationship with Alice and is discharged from the army. At the same time, Alice's anger at the unjust system leads to her outing a closeted homophobic NBA player on her podcast. The buzz from the public scandal lands Alice a gig as a co-host on the daytime talk show The Look, where she is pressured into providing more gossip about closeted celebrities. As their relationship progresses, Alice and Tasha realize they have little in common and when Alice meets someone she is attracted to, she considers breaking up with Tasha.

Alice and Tasha continue to struggle with their incompatibility in season 6, but decide to stick it out together. Meanwhile, Alice is fired from The Look after trying to spotlight more serious issues such as hate crimes on the show. Alice also works on a screenplay but her story idea is stolen and sold for $500,000 by Jenny, putting the two at odds. At the same time, Alice and Tasha befriend Jamie who has more in common with the two of them than they do with each other. The three of them become inseparable until Tasha and Jamie admit to having feelings for each other, and a heartbroken Alice encourages them to be with each other instead.

Generation Q season 1 begins ten years later, with Alice now the host of her own late-night talk show and in a long-term relationship with Nat. Alice attempts to reconcile Nat with her ex-wife Gigi and soon finds herself in an unlikely "throuple" with both of them. Meanwhile, her talk show's ratings are falling as she insists on covering more serious issues. Alice is heartbroken when she finds Nat and Gigi in bed together without her, and assumes that Nat wants to be with Gigi only. She is surprised when Nat appears on her show to publicly declare that she wants Alice not Gigi; Nat's declaration of love is a viral hit and saves Alice's show from cancellation.

In season 2, Alice has scored a book deal and her editor Tom encourages her to bare her soul in the book. Meanwhile, Alice and Nat's relationship hits a roadblock when the throuple experience leads Nat to realize she is polyamorous. Alice tries her best to accommodate Nat's polyamory but, with Tom's help, eventually lets Nat go. Alice and Tom grow closer and begin dating, although Alice is initially hesitant about publicly dating a man given her LGBT brand. Just as Alice and Tom are about to depart on a promotional tour for her book, Alice finds an engagement ring in Tom's jacket and panics.

Background[]

Early life and family[]

Alice was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.[1] Her parents are divorced[1] and her father left at some point,[13] leaving her to be raised by her mother, struggling Hollywood actress Lenore Pieszecki.[1] Alice's father would remain "distant" in her life,[14] while her mother would go on to remarry and divorce several more times.[23]

Alice's childhood photos.

Alice was a tomboy growing up.[24] While Lenore genuinely seems to care about Alice,[25] she was pretty inept at parenthood and would feed her daughter weight-loss shakes for breakfast.[26] Lenore also exploited Alice in her quest for Hollywood fame; she once stole Alice's identity to get on a dating show that she was too old for, which in turn led to more incidents of criminal identity theft that ruined Alice's credit score.[13]

Alice has a brother named Nelson[15] and an unnamed sister, both of whom are married with children by the start of The L Word.[16] Alice does not have a close relationship with her siblings, but is at least on speaking terms with them.[16] In Alice's view, her siblings think their lives are more important than hers just because they are married with children.[16]

In ninth grade, Alice had a lesbian English teacher named Ms. McCauley who Alice credits with changing her life for the better.[27] Alice lost her virginity when she was 17 to the guy who played her mother's son in a made-for-television movie.[28] In high school, Alice also had a drunken grope with another girl, Annie Flaherty, under the bleaches at school; however before they could kiss, Annie threw up all over Alice.[29] According to Lenore, after that incident Alice played the song "Closer to Fine" by the lesbian duo Indigo Girls on repeat.[29] Alice also went to prom in all four years of high school because other students kept asking her to be their date,[30] and although she still loves prom,[30] she ended up not enjoying her own prom nights.[31]

College and coming out[]

Alice and her college bandmates.

In college, Alice was the lead guitarist in a rock band called "Butter" with her boyfriend Greg (lead singer), Dave (drummer) and Brad (bass guitarist). According to Alice, Butter was pretty famous on campus and they played at their local bar, The Tap Room, every weekend. When Brad quit one day, the band found a new bass player in a girl named Tayo, and Alice's attraction to Tayo made her realize she was bisexual. Alice and Tayo subsequently dated for two months before Tayo broke Alice's heart.[29]

At some point, Alice had a rebound affair with a "voluptuous former lesbian" named April, who happened to be the woman Alice's first boyfriend previously left her for.[17] Alice was also a member of ACT UP during her college years.[24]

Meeting Bette and Shane[]

LW S03E07 Bette and Alice 01

Alice and Bette on a date at the Los Angeles Opera in 1996[32].

After college, Alice began working for LA Magazine and got to know the movers and shakers of Los Angeles. Around seven years prior to The L Word, she met Bette Porter when the gallerist asked for her help in developing an invite list for a party at her gallery.[22] Alice and Bette subsequently dated for six weeks,[33] during which time Bette cheated on her.[34] On their third date, the pair went to the Los Angeles Opera where Bette "finger-fucked" Alice in public during a performance of the Flower Duet. Immediately after, Bette broke up with Alice and told her that she had just met a "straight girl" that she could see herself falling in love with.[32] The "straight girl" in question was Tina Kennard, who Alice herself had indirectly introduced to Bette, as Tina's then-boyfriend Eric was one of the people she invited to Bette's aforementioned art gallery party.[22] After their breakup, Bette and Alice remained close friends.[29]

Alice was also the first of her friends to meet Shane McCutcheon, when she went to get her hair cut at a salon that Shane was working at. Alice asked Shane out for coffee afterwards, hoping to get some gossip about the celebrities who frequented the salon. Although Shane didn't have any gossip to share, she agreed to the free drink because she was starving and broke at the time.[35]

Meeting Dana[]

LW S03E11 Dana and Alice flashback 02

Alice interviews Dana for a sports magazine in 1999.

Alice was later hired by a women's sports magazine to interview tennis player Dana Fairbanks. The interview ended badly, with Dana threatening legal action, after Alice suggested the deeply closeted Dana might have had a crush on a girl when she was younger. Because of this interview fiasco, Alice's story was canned and the magazine never hired her again. Alice ran into Dana again some time later and the two became friends. At the time, Alice was dating Gabby Deveaux who was cheating on her. Not long after, Alice invited Dana to Bette and Tina's Millennium Y2K party, where she met Alice's other friends including Shane and Kit.[36]

Lead up to The L Word[]

At the start of The L Word, Alice is a lifestyle journalist for LA Magazine, stuck writing fluff pieces and "best of" listicles[37] while her more ambitious ideas are dismissed by her editor.[3] She identifies as bisexual but has a self-described strong preference for women.[22]

LW S01E09 The Chart 01

The Chart in Alice's living room.

Alice comes to realize how insular the lesbian community in Los Angeles is, and believes that they are all connected through their sexual encounters with one another.[37][3] To prove this, she develops The Chart, a compilation of the relationships and hookups which she knows of, and obsesses over how this network of affairs is linked to her.[37][3] Alice even has a section of the chart drawn out on a giant whiteboard in her living room.

The L Word[]

Alice identifies as bisexual, she has a few flings, one being with a lesbian-identified man, Lisa. She soon decides that her true feelings lie in a secret relationship with Dana Fairbanks, who was then engaged to her fiance Tonya. After Dana and Tonya split up, Alice and Dana continue a relationship until the end of the season two, after which Alice has a breakdown. Dana leaves her for her ex Lara, and although their intimacy is never shown on-screen, it is implied that they later get back together when Dana finds out she is dying of breast cancer. Dana dies, Alice has a short-term relationship with Lara out of simple comfort.

Alice begins video podcasting on OurChart and discovers a woman named Papi who has the highest amount of sexual encounters on the chart. Through her, she later meets and starts dating Tasha Williams, a Captain in the Army National Guard. During a confrontation between Papi's friends in Alice's apartment, Tasha accidentally hits her while trying to break up a fight and has to take her to the hospital. While at the hospital Alice learns of Tasha's military background and the two get into an argument over a disagreement about the ethics of the war in Iraq. Despite their differences in politics, they choose to continue their relationship.

The following season, after Alice is seen in public with Tasha by one of her homophobic subordinates at work and openly has a lover's disagreement with her while on base she is drawn into Tasha's Army investigation for homosexual conduct. During the investigation, two Army investigators come to her apartment and start to invade her privacy looking for evidence of Tasha having a lesbian relationship with her. Alice asks the officers to leave and then proceeds to hide evidence of her relationship with Tasha in case they return with a search warrant. In response, Tasha goes to her lawyer's house and berates him for not giving her prior warning of the visit by the investigators.

Alice is invited to a party for closeted homosexual celebrities and, despite signing a non-disclosure agreement, captures a video of Daryl Brewer, an NBA player, in an intimate moment with another man. Later, Tasha and Alice watch Brewer make homophobic remarks on the news in response to another NBA player coming out, and Tasha disapproves. Alice misinterprets her remarks and puts the incriminating video on her podcast. The video goes viral and Alice is the center of a media storm for outing Brewer. Alice defends her actions on a national news broadcast. This angers Tasha because it jeopardizes her Army investigation and opens another rift in her relationship with Alice.

Shortly after, Alice and Tasha decide they can no longer be together. During Tasha's separation board for homosexual conduct, Alice testifies in front of Colonel Gillian Davis and makes a statement about being outed that caused Davis to back off on trying to get Tasha discharged. However, Tasha decided that she no longer wanted to serve in the Army if she cannot be with the person she loves and admits to the board that she is indeed in love with Alice, effectively outing herself and resulting in her discharge.

After Tasha is discharged from the Army under Don't ask, don't tell, they continue their relationship where it left off, though it's a little unsteady. Just about the same time, Alice gets a host spot on a TV show called "The Look", where she meets Clea Mason, a New Zealand clothing designer. Alice develops an instant attraction to her, but decides to resist those feelings in order to work on her relationship with Tasha.

As Alice and Tasha's relationship continues to wane, she tries her best to make things work. An encounter with Gabby Deveaux at Papi's house on the season premiere triggers Alice to admit her troubled past, and to refuse to part ways with Tasha. They are shown visiting the show's recurrent therapist Dan Foxworthy, who decrees their relationship to be ill-fated. Nonetheless they try to stick together.

Also on this season, Alice has decided to venture into the film business by writing a treatment on a killer idea she had. A potential conflict of interest with Jenny is hinted as a not-very-excited Schecter is suggested as a reviewer for the treatment by Tina. Jenny later diminishes Alice's treatment as unoriginal. But when Jenny eventually writes and sells a script featuring the exact premise of Alice's treatment, Alice is furious and gives an ultimatum to Shane, who is now romantically involved with Jenny, to dump Jenny or lose her long-standing friendship with Alice.

In her job as a host on The Look, Alice reads a letter on the air from a girl whose brother was killed in a hate crime because he sent a love letter to another boy. This results in her being fired, but also results in a call from a woman named Jamie Chen, who works at a Gay and Lesbian Center, to help talk the letter writer off a ledge.

Alice becomes more heavily involved with the center after doing this, and she and Tasha become fast friends with Jamie. It becomes obvious to some of Alice's friends that a three-way crush appears to be forming between Alice, Tasha and Jamie. But as time passes, Alice begins to suspect that the attraction between Tasha and Jamie, who are much more closely matched than either woman with Alice, is stronger. After the three friends lose a dance contest at the charity dance for the Gay & Lesbian Center that they orchestrated, Alice tearfully tells Tasha to pursue a relationship with Jamie, and then again presents this idea during a later lunch meeting with the pair. Tasha does not want to do this, but Alice decides to give her time to make this decision, in effect letting her go.

When Tasha does not immediately contact her, Alice sadly assumes that she has chosen Jamie. She attends Bette and Tina's going away party (they are moving to New York), and tells her friends that she has decided to make peace with Jenny for Shane's sake. However, it is Alice who first alerts the party guests to the discovery of Jenny's body in Bette and Tina's pool. Fortunately, Tasha arrives at the party and comforts Alice. The series ends with the group of women being questioned by interrogating police officers regarding Jenny's death.

Due to the proposed premise of the planned L Word spinoff The Farm, it is assumed that Alice was supposed to be convicted of murdering Jenny (However, Showtime's decision to pass on hosting the new program might negate this development).

Interrogation Tapes[]

Generation Q[]

Season 1[]

In "Let's Do It Again",Over ten years after Jenny's death, Alice has relocated to Los Angeles and is the host of a new talk show, "Alice". It is also revealed that, under unknown circumstances, she ultimately broke up with Tasha, as she is shown to have settled down with therapist Nat Bailey, though she does not get on well with Nat's adopted children or with Gigi Ghorbani, Nat's meddling ex-wife and the children's biological mother. After Bette's campaign to become Mayor of Los Angeles is threatened when one of her previous sexual affairs is exposed, Alice invites Bette to appear on her talk show to tell her side of the story. Meanwhile, Alice becomes closer to Gigi and learns that Nat and Gigi's relationship ended when Gigi cheated on her around the same time Nat began a secret affair with Alice, and all of their mutual friends sided with Gigi and abandoned Nat. Feeling sympathetic, Alice suggests that Nat and Gigi spend more time together to renew their friendship, against Shane's advice, but Alice becomes jealous when Nat and Gigi start to enjoy each other's company and appear to snub her, fearing that Nat will betray her for Gigi as Dana betrayed her for Lara. At Shane's 40th birthday party, the three get drunk and end up having a threesome, but in the aftermath, Nat and Gigi find difficulties in overcoming their differences due to Gigi's previous infidelity and they enter a three-way relationship. However, Gigi continues to spite Nat at every opportunity, such as outing their status to strangers and kissing Alice before informing the children. Alice offers her support to Nat, who tells Alice she loves her and does not want to lose her. Meanwhile, Alice is informed that her show is approaching cancellation, and that same night, she returns home to find Nat and Gigi having sex without her. Distraught, Alice moves in with Shane for a few days until she finally answers Nat's calls for a lunch meeting. Nat and Gigi reveal to Alice that they have overcome their differences and that they want to continue being polyamorous, but when Alice discovers that Gigi has actually been living with Nat during those days and the two have been having sex frequently without her, she openly accuses Nat of only using her sexually for the past two years to get over her heartbreak from Gigi's infidelity, and angrily leaves. Alice later learns that her show will not be renewed, and goes against the producers' wishes and invites Roxane Gay on. During the interview, she reveals Nat and Gigi's betrayal, at which point Nat reveals herself in the audience and goes onto the stage to tell Alice that she loves her and has chosen her over Gigi, having discovered that Gigi was only out to destroy Alice and Nat's relationship out of spite. Alice forgives Nat and the video footage goes viral, saving the show.

  • Alice was the guitarist in a college band[29] while in real life, Leisha Hailey has been a singer and guitarist in the bands The Murmurs and Uh Huh Her.
  • Alice is the reason Bette, Tina, Shane and Dana all met and became friends. Alice and Bette first met and dated after Bette asked Alice to use her journalism contacts to help her with the guest list for an art gallery opening. One of the guests Alice invited was Tina's then-boyfriend who brought Tina along as his date to Bette's gallery. Alice then met Shane when she got her hair done at the salon Shane was working at. And finally Alice met and befriended Dana when she interviewed her for a sports article, and subsequently introduced her to the others.

  2. 2.0 2.1 Alice says in "Launch Party" (GQ 2x08) that she has not been in a relationship with a man since she was in her 20s; the last men she dated were "Lisa" and Andrew in TLW S1, thus making Alice in her 20s at the time. Moreover, "Lean on Me" (GQ 2x02) is said to take place 17 years after "Limb from Limb" (TLW 1x13), and Alice was already past her 40th birthday by the time of "LA Times" (GQ 1x04), thus making Alice in her 40s in GQ S1.
